Interviewed by Majid Muhammad Al-Bakali

First of all, we welcome Dr. Issa Shweil, specialist in psychiatry and neurology. Through your work, have you noticed an increase in the number of psychological cases?

Yes, the number of people suffering from psychological and neurological disorders continues to increase. In fact, you notice that the numbers are doubling from year to year.

– What are the reasons that lead to an increase in the number of people suffering from psychological and neurological disorders?

The reasons are numerous and abundant, the most important of which is the economic suffering caused by war and aggression, and the psychological pressures that everyone experiences and which are increasing day by day, harming thousands of people and turning them into patients, as well as the wars and their impacts and damages, whether on the people participating in the battles, or on the citizens located in the combat and confrontation zones, in addition to the general situation in which Yemenis suffer from instability and unrest in everything, because prices of goods are not stable, and people are not secure in their livelihoods or housing. Many fears negatively affect a large number of people and afflict them with multiple psychological disorders that vary in severity and type from person to person.

Since the outbreak of the Corona epidemic and the media exaggeration it has witnessed, and its impact on many people due to excessive fear and doubt, they have become psychologically ill, and bad habits, such as excessive consumption of khat and smoking, are one of the causes of the development of a psychological or nervous state.

– Have you received any psychological cases caused by the Corona epidemic?

– Prolonged social isolation, loneliness, stress, anxiety and financial recession; Due to cessation of activities, closure of markets, establishments, factories, etc., they are like powerful storms sweeping over people’s mental health.

If we talk about the specific situation in Yemen and the Arab region, we will find that the above-mentioned factors are multiplying and their impact is multiplying, because the region is basically going through economic and political storms, endless crises, wars and other pandemics, in addition to what we have discussed about the impact of the Corona pandemic, its impact on the individual and society and the effects of random media exaggeration.

So it is difficult to avoid all these factors, and ultimately we see that the gap in psychological disorders is widening due to these factors, and we need broad societal solidarity to avoid these effects.

We must not forget the group that already suffers from psychological disorders and the impact of these factors on them, because they worsen the psychological state of this group more than others. Psychological support for this group must therefore be intensified.

The families of many people suffering from a psychological or neurological illness complain that their patients do not return to their normal, stable state. Does this mean that psychiatric hospitals are unable to provide appropriate medications to psychiatric patients?

Hospitals and psychologists do their best and provide their services to patients, whoever they are, without hesitation, and the majority of patients leave the hospitals in good condition and improved. However, there are some important factors that affect how quickly a psychiatric patient responds to treatment and whether their condition improves. Among these factors are social environment, level of consciousness and harmful habits such as khat, smoking and sniffing. The more aware and educated those around the patient are, the more useful it will be for them to emerge from their psychological state and respond to treatment.

– What is the best treatment for psychological disorders?

The best treatment for psychological disorders is to treat the causes that led to the psychological condition, whatever they may be.

– What advice do you give to families suffering from mental illness?

Our advice is that members of society should not treat a mentally ill person as if he were crazy. Because this causes him what is called (stigma), which doubles his condition and worsens it, and they should focus on eliminating the causes that led to his psychological condition.
